Monterey's Majestic World of Wines
Monterey - A Hub For Wine Production
Monterey County, California is renowned for its stunning scenery and rich heritage. It's also renowned for its wine. Monterey is among the Golden State's biggest wine growing areas, after all. No trip to this tranquil and picturesque Central Coast region is complete without a taste of authentic Monterey wine. Monterey wines are beloved for their delectable and distinct tastes.
Monterey's Wine History
Monterey County's first encounter with wine grapes occurred more than two centuries ago. The Franciscan Friars presented the people of the area with these grapes close to southern Monterey County's Soledad Mission. They realized then that the weather of the region (heat in the middle of the day calmed by fog both in the morning and afternoon) was absolutely ideal for creating the strong fruity flavoring that winemakers covet so much. The rest is history. Commercial wineries started to see great success in the area at the start of the sixties, and Monterey County is currently home to an abundance of quality wineries and wine rooms that people from all over flock to year in and year out.

Monterey Wine and Climate Considerations

People who want to experience solid examples of Chardonnays and Pinot Noirs in Monterey should go to Pessagno Winery, Talbott Vineyards, Testarossa Winery, Pisoni and Roar. Monterey typically isn't warm enough for Cabernet. Despite that, visitors can taste refined Cabernet options at both Galante Vineyards and Bernardus Winery.
Wineries and wine tasting rooms aren't the only way to have fun and savor wine in gorgeous Monterey. The lovely county is home to a number of wine-related events that are sure to make for fun and memorable experiences. August's Winemakers' Celebration and June's Monterey Wine Festival are two standout examples of such events.
